Indonesia-Vietnam Collaboration Potentially a Global Fisheries Sector Champion
Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono revealed that fisheries collaboration between Indonesia and Vietnam has the potential to make the two countries as fisheries champions in the region and even at the global level. This was conveyed by Minister Trenggono at the Meet Indonesia event in Nha Trang, Vietnam, Thursday (3/21/2024). The event was attended by representatives of the Indonesian and Vietnamese governments as well as business people from both countries. The activities included conferences, exhibitions, business matching, state meetings, and site visits.“If Indonesia and Vietnam unite, these two countries will become a force in the region,” said Minister Trenggono in his speech.Minister Trenggono explained that Indonesia has very strong and superior sources of marine and fisheries raw materials. Meanwhile, Vietnam has expertise in the field of enlargement and processing of the fisheries sector. For this reason, he continued, fisheries cooperation between the governments of Indonesia and Vietnam, which was agreed upon some time ago, must be immediately realized through real fisheries investment in the two countries.According to him, the fisheries cooperation is not limited to encouraging ecological sustainability and economic growth of the two countries but will also contribute to the fulfillment of global fisheries commodity needs. Based on data, the need for protein will continue to increase along with the estimated increase in human population by 30 percent in 2045 or touching 9.7 billion people. “Investing in Indonesia and Vietnam is no longer limited by region. As part of investment cooperation between Indonesia and Vietnam to become part of the global supplier in the marine and fisheries sector,” he explained.Fisheries investment in Indonesia also shows a positive trend. Data for the third quarter of 2023 reached Rp9.56 trillion, consisting of PMDN Rp5.32 trillion, PMA Rp1.4 trillion, and Investment Credit Rp2.84 trillion. Based on the business sector, fish processing ranks first in investment at Rp3.65 trillion, followed by aquaculture at Rp2.6 trillion, marketing at Rp1.95 trillion, fishing at Rp1.18 trillion and fishery services at Rp186.51 billion.
